If you're like me, and I'm sorry if you are, you have probably played Mario Kart 64 before. A decade after its release, we now have Mario Kart Wii on our hands. For the first time, we have a true sequel to the 64 version, but is it better than before? The answer is mostly yes. It seemed like when Nintendo made this game, they took only the best features of each kart game and sprinkled a little Wii magic to create a solid addition to the series.
Functionality:
The big question here is does the Wii-Wheel work? Based on my experience it works...sometimes. In order for the Wii-mote to feel full tilt sensitivity, the Wii-Wheel needs to be completely straight up-and-down. You might use it a couple times for the novelty, but you'll find yourself giving up and going with the Wii-mote/Nunchuck setup. The physics of the karts seem as if they weigh more, and that its harder to turn them, but that could just be from the Wii-Wheel. Also, if you like to use the B-Button for Jump, better keep your thumb pressed against the other side of the Wii-Wheel, because the trigger pushes the Wii-mote out of the wheel and the B-Button becomes useless.
Graphics:
This is a no brainer. Its pretty, but it won't be winning any awards for graphical detail anytime soon. Nice resolution for the Wii Console, but the Wii Console isn't trying to go for graphical prowess.
Single Player:
If it wasn't for the fact that the only way you can unlock all the items in the game is through single player, this mode would be the least touched. The AI in this game are either really lucky with their items, or they have conspired with the item generator to take you down. I don't know how many times I'm in the lead by more than half a lap and I suddenly get hit by a blue shell, followed by three red shells, perfectly timed as to allow field to catch up and eventually win the race. Why are we punished for doing good? Also, unlocking items through grinding achievements are no fun. I'll just stick to the stock items thank you.
Multiplayer:
This is Mario Kart Wii's shining attribute. The online play is still either play anonymously, or exchange friend codes, but it is the best online experience out there right now. With instant hookup and so far lagless online play, even on opening night. Bravo Nintendo, bravo.
Overall Fun Factor:
This is a solid game, make no doubt about it. I loved Mario Kart 64, and was glad to see the return of the drifting mini-turbo, but this game seemed rather dull to me. I played it for an hour and realized there was nothing special about this game that grabs you and makes you want to keep playing. The online is the best feature, but really only the kids and parents will play this game for a while. The hardcore gamers that are looking for the next big game from the Wii better look elsewhere. I wasn't impressed.
Score:
For Kids and their Parents: 9/10
For Everyone Else: 7/10
